Dawning Village
A community based organization
Our Philosophy
We Believe that a well-rounded child becomes a healthy and contributing adult. In order to achieve this goal, a child education must start early and include more than academics, it must encompass awareness and introduction of one's culture and the culture of others in the world around them. We believe this goal is accomplished through a well-balanced curriculum.
Dawning Village's Philosophy is one that firmly believes that every child should be treated equally and with deep responsiveness geared toward their needs. Our purpose is to create in every child a self-image where the child can explore the world around him/her with a positive feeling about himself/herself and others. Therefore Dawning Village Dcc should provide an environment of experiences that promote respect for the children, the families, and the community.
Our Mission
The mission of Dawning Village Dcc is to enable people through education and involvement in decision-making, to gain greater control over their own lives and to make a greater contribution to their community.
Education is a lifelong experiences, which is not limited to the classroom. Dawning village provides a sense of community for the children, parents and staff. We recognize and ensure parents' right to be involved in the decision making process in all programs.
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world".
Our Programs
Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK)
Dawning Village has two UPK classrooms. We are classified as a Community Based Organization (CBO). Our UPK curriculum is aligned with Department of education standards. DOE regulations for the UPK program require the implementation of a developmen-tally appropriate curriculum, such as The Creative Curriculum, Educating Young Children-High/Scope, The Bank Street Developmental Interaction Approach, and the Montessori Approach.
UPK provides four-year-old children access, at no charge, to comprehensive early childhood education experiences that promote their social-emotional, creative expressive/aes-thetic, physical, cognitive, linguistic and cultural development. In New York City, children are eligible if they become 4 years old by December 31 of the school year in which they are enrolled in the program. UPK programs operate 21/2 hours per day for five days a week, 180 days per year.
2-Year & 3-Year Old Preschool Classes
Dawning Village offers Full day care for children age 2.0 to 4.0 in one of our two Preschool classrooms. The program is specifically designed to meet the needs of our children and we follows a developmentally appropriate curriculum which encourages children to learn through exploration and integrates all the developmental areas.
The learning goals for the children are carried out systematically through the use of Teaching Strategies Gold. We follow both the Creative Curriculum and the Core Body Of Knowledge. The Core Body of Knowledge is organized in seven core competency areas: 1. Child Growth and Development; 2. Family and Community Relationships; 3. Observation and Assessment; 4. Environment and Curriculum; 5. Health, Safety, and Nutrition; 6. Professionalism and Leadership; and 7. Administration and Management. Within each competency area are core competencies.
Each classroom is divided into learning centers. They are equipped with computers. We have a large self-contained playground. During outdoor play we implement the Spark program which includes physical activities encouraging use of large and small muscles.
